Tamara Hylton’s Top 10 Cleaning Hacks for Christmas

Cleaning is synonymous to Christmas. As the season is upon us, one of the things, especially as women that we want to do is to ensure our homes are properly cleaned and we’ll decorated.

Here I have put together 10 Cleaning Hacks that you can follow to make sure that your home is cleaned and refreshed as you celebrate with family and friends in this beautiful season.

1. Water is the best cleaning agent. Use but don’t over use. Put into a spray bottle and spritz. Make sure to dry all areas properly as damn areas can develop mildew or moulds over time.

2. Finding it hard to get dirt out of those hard to reach corners and crevices? Use a new paint brush or an old toothbrush for removing hard to reach dirt in corners of windows, ceiling fans, ac units, blinds etc. Make sure to have a collection of cleaning rags for different areas in the house. Colour code them. Prevent cross contamination.

3. Do not over use chemicals. Use the ratio of 1 tbsp bleach to 1 cup of water. Dilute all cleaning chemicals in water before use.

4. It is extremely dangerous to mix cleaning agents. Use separately. Do not mix bleach with soaps or ammonia. They will give off dangerous toxins that are harmful to your health.

5. Ensure that the rooms are properly ventilated.

6. Clean from top to bottom- clean fans, ac units, walls, windows ( remove curtains and wash, put to dry before cleaning windows), doors, closet doors etc

7. Deep clean mattress using a simple washing soap solution to get rid of spots and dirt’s, then use bicarbonate of soda or baking soda to deodorize. Do not over wet mattress- use cleaning cloth and spray bottle with soap solution to get rid of spots and dirt. Sprinkle with bicarbonate of soda, allow to dry for an hour then vacuum.

8. Cleaning the bathroom – remove and wash shower curtains, including the protective shower plastic. Did you know it is machine-washable? Yes it is. Wash with whites and add some bleach. It will come out just as new.
Clean bathroom walls or tiles, dust usually accumulates over time even though not very visible on those white tiles.

Clean toilet – you should clean your toilet as often as your brush your teeth- every day. Make sure to clean around the base of the toilet and the grout area. There can be really messy.

The good old newspaper with water is still perfect for cleaning mirrors and glass window. As I have no newspaper, a lint free cloth, paper towel and Windex works for me. Make sure to buff or polish well, removing all water marks

9. Get your pots sparkly and shiny by using the good old Carbolic Soap for scouring. Yes! It works like magic!! Use a metal scrub for tough stains. No black pots (bun up pots) in your kitchen for Christmas!!!

10. Declutter!!! Make your home light and refreshing by getting rid of all those things that are taking up space but you are not using them. As a general rule if you have not worn it or used it in the past 6 months to a year, you probably will not be using or wearing it soon. Take it to the Red Cross or Salvation Army. Have a yard sale if you want to make some extra funds this Christmas.

11. Did I say 10? LoL. Well here’s a bonus point- A CLEAN HOME WILL BE SMELLING FRESH! However, use deodorizers – air fresheners to top off your cleaning. Scented candles, humidifiers with essential oils are awesome. Those wonderful baked products will have your home smelling heavenly once cleaned!
